Have you started to build your identity as an engineer?

We live in a world where having an identity is very essential and difficult too.

On a funny note I am not talking about having a voter id or adhaar card.

I am talking about having an identity in your social and professional life.

What is engineering?

Wikipedia says, "Engineering is the discipline, skill, and profession of acquiring and applying scientific,

Economic, social, and practical knowledge, in order to design and build structures,

Machines, devices, systems, materials and processes".

I know you are thinking this guy must be a developer, simply copied the definition from Wikipedia. Yes if you think copy and paste is very simple and anybody can do that. But it’s your misconception. Reusing of code is very important, time saving and essential technique in software engineering. In engineering you will have to do many things.  If an engineer builds some system which already exists, don’t just think that he just built the copy of an existing system. There will 100 reasons behind building that. There is no end for evolution which is the major and last phase of SDLC.

What I think is "One day god was tired of creating new and good things in this world, and then he thought of creating an engineer, who will do that job".  So proud to be an engineer.

In today's world there are 3 types of engineers.

First they want to get a good job in some very reputed company. Good salary, luxury in life and fun with family.

Second they want to do something in life, but they are not able put any efforts towards their goals. Constraints can be many.

Third they want to do something very special in their life and want to gain a real identity. They dont want to go behind a Sheep like just another sheep.

Here third category is very interesting and this category has people like

Larry Ellison (Oracle)

Steve Jobs (Apple)

Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook) and many other great engineers cum entrepreneurs.

Dear budding engineer, analyze yourself and decide which category you fall into. You are an engineer you should be hungry for knowledge and should have great urge to build new things by making use of your knowledge. 

Trust me you can change the people's life with your creations. Mark Zuckerberg has proved it already. And as the title of this article says you need to build your identity as an engineer, but how do it. The only way to have a great identity in the world of engineering is by your work. Trust me "Your work is your identity". This line exists from ages. But it is still true even in case of engineers. 

You are an engineer.

Analyze and think

What is your present knowledge?

What can I build with it?

Do I need to increase my knowledge?

What do I have to learn to implement my idea?

Is my idea valid? Discuss with your fellow engineers

Love your work, Build, change the world and get your identity.  And of course be proud of your work. There is nothing wrong in it.

Friends how many of us are doing a job which was really a dream come true and how many of us are into that kind of job wherein its just fulfilling our materialistic requirements rather than job satisfaction. Think over guys. So here is a beautiful article by our friend Mr. Mahalingesh that triggers your thought process. Understanding his concept is a vital key to improving the quality of your life.

‘EVERY END IS A NEW BEGINNING’

        

         Every beginning has an end. And every end is a new beginning. 

It's a relentless cycle seen in every aspect of our lives.

        A year starts, a year ends, only to give birth to another.

        Bittersweet to say the least- The 4 long yrs of Engineering has now just turned into a short span with beautiful butterflies emerging. Thoughts while joining the college about studies, internals, records, practical’s, physics cycle, chemistry cycle, assignments so on & so forth., has now transformed into ‘Yes, I have done it’, with the strange feeling of fear of the outer world. Whatever it may be but the bondings with the fellow students would never change having the memories of the college, friends, hangouts, night outs, treks & trips, ‘Sankalp’- college fest.  All these are part & parcel of each and every student who in a couple of a days will be transformed from student to an alumnus.

        Today the 19^th of May, 2012 witnessed colorful outgoing batch dressed in their best, engrossed in their feeling of oneness in their final farewell. The strong desire & promise to stay connected after the college days of these young butterflies was learnt by we the alumni group & extended our goodwill to join hands & to form a firm bridge as Sapthagirians.

         Letting the young ones know about the alumni, its objectives, purpose was very much crucial and essential & this was effectively done by the team members – Mahesh, Sharaschandra, Ankur, Avinash &  other Team members by giving a small presentation.

         Following interests were made known with the support from college faculty & alumni members along with sharing the responsibilities.

I. Roles & Responsibilities 

      

      College fraternity:

• Joining  facebook "Sapthagiri Alumni"  group and be part of the ongoing discussion within the group which motivates our students and Alumni
• Spreading the awareness among the college students about the Alumni group and helping to achieve this challenge by making students to be part of the group
• Taking Comprehensive steps through notice boards, and in class, faculties spreading the positiveness happening in Alumni group

• Creating a Alumni section in website  by students of pre final year/ final year content wise help provided by our Placement officer, Suma Vishwanath and Alumni members
• Identifying atleast 2 members from each branch from the respective ongoing batch as the representatives for the Alumni group in the college and sending out the contact detail to Suma /any of our Alumni member
• Showcasing ideas related to Free lancing, Entrepreneurship for  students of 4-8th semester, identifying the interested candidates and redirecting them to the Alumni group 
• Inputs regarding the expectation from the students which require support from the Alumni  will be  shared with all members from the respective Branch HOD's
• Integrating the projects done by the final year students with the college website / Alumni group for the betterment

     Alumni Members: 

• A career guidance support from the Alumni members to the students in showcasing the various sectors option availability. 
• Supporting in conducting the workshops, industrial visit which was also mentioned among the prime need.
• Providing the details regarding the internships opportunities available in our working sector to the college students
• Helping the students idea through our innovative cell and helping the required support from existing Entrepreneur who are part of Alumni group.
• Providing the support for the Job opportunities by making our Alumni members to discuss with HR's of respective  companies and build a communication channel with the college placement officer

               

II. New things that are planned to happen soon:

•  Gathering the Accessibility contact details that need to be posted in the Alumni column of college website  
•  To bring in the interest among the students in preparing the case studies on any idea they are having.
• Alumni team to come with time tracker for the upcoming events and share with the college fraternity to be in same page of understanding.

 

III. Road map for the next 6 months planned:

• An event on Knowledge sharing and new technology to be organised in the month of August.
•  Actively participating as Alumni team in motivating and spreading goodwill , awareness of Alumni during the freshers day which will be held in month of  August / September
• Breaking out the existing challenges faced i.e., interactions, awareness about group by the month of September.

 

         All these above information have surely ignited the minds of the current batch with the importance of the alumni association & the healthy work done by it. 

        We are immensely grateful for the support given by our college management, beloved director Sri Srinivasan, Principal Dr. C Puttamadappa, AO Mr. Gopala Krishna, Respective HOD’s, PO Mrs. Suma Vishwantath & also thankful for the right kind of team we have in our alumni who do everything possible to the extent to do their best in bringing change.

        As this batch walks out of the gates for the one last time, another group is coming in for the first, so this begins a cycle once again. Good luck in whatever the future holds for the 2012 batch & hoping to see the growth of alumni members.

             ‘IMAGINATION IS MORE POWERFUL THAN KNOWLEDGE’   - ALBERT EINSTEIN

             You might have witnessed the story of man evolving, but we witnessed Sapthagirians evolving and their potentialities that has raised to heights, in just one meet up. Yes, you heard it right- ‘Sapthagirians evolving’- starting with the first batch of 2005 to the latest outgoing batch of 2012 under one roof was pleasure in itself. Indeed an awesome feeling to have enthusiastic and likeminded people who want some ‘change’ to be made in the college and to society.

              Imagination is more powerful than knowledge – with this inspiration Alumni admins and core admins along with the college authorities held its 2^nd meet up on 5/5/2012 at our very own dear college – ‘ Sapthagiri college of Engineering’.

              Sailing in the same boat, about 15 of us started to give out ideas, many things were discussed, brilliant ideas & suggestions started pouring in to build this Alumni association with a strong foundation.

              The discussion was divided into 4 headings.

I. Objectives to be set up for the alumni association

• Building a ‘single communicating platform’ for alumni
• To have a connectivity among the alumni, alumni & the college, alumni & the current final year students.
• To help the association & to contribute time, energy & expertise to help SCE fraternity grow, develop & prosper.
• To coordinate & promote programs that instill goodwill & to provide support for placements & internships.
• To pool the skills & applying the available resources to enhance professional & personal growth of the members.
• To facilitate learning process through exchange of ideas & knowledge.
•  Active participation & learning healthy interaction among alumni.

II. Roles & responsibilities for the members in the core & the admin team

•  Share at least one post once in a week/ fortnight of your interested topic or jobs.
•  Appreciate and recognize the new shares posted in the group as a motivation factor by giving positive comments & likes.
•  Promoting by all means for having updated database of alumni.
• Go on adding new members to your team & spread the awareness about good things happening.
•  Not to entertain any unhealthy discussion in the group.

III. The Next Immediates- materializing shortly

•       To have our own discussion room within the college.
•      To have an official email id for the alumni from the college- by Suma Vishwanath.
•        Segregation of teams in Google groups created with mailing lists- by Ankur & vinay.
•        To frame a time tracker for upcoming events- by Chethan & Avinash.
•        Transformation of the current outgoing students into Alumni in the upcoming Farewell event.

IV. Road map for coming 6 months

•       An event on knowledge sharing & new technology to be organized in the month of August in the college.
•        Active participation of the alumni team in creating awareness, motivating & spreading goodwill of alumni in the upcoming Fresher’s day (in the month of September).
•        College management will propose the idea of having an Innovative Cell to HOD’s & lecturers.
•        Continuous follow-ups by college management ultimately leading to awareness among students about alumni.

            These were the few ‘minutes of the meeting’ . We were motivated by the participation of Srinivas Sir, Gopalakrishna Sir, AO & Suma maam, PO. The college authorities also promised us to be a part of the Facebook group & support us in all our endeavours.

             I would like to congratulate each & every admin of 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 & 2012 batches who took part in this healthy discussion and made it a success & would thank the college authorities for their tremendous support, participation & hospitality.

Guys, It’s time for some action now….Let’s do it.

          A unique atmosphere prevails at hotel ‘The Solitaire’ when you meet the somewhat known unknowns. Yes, this was the situation when today 14/4/2012 the ‘Alumni admins meet up’ happened which was presided by Suma Hiremath, the head-placement, training & HR of our very own dear college ‘Sapthagiri college of Engineering’.

          There was an immense energy in all & a mystique amalgam of eagerness to put up their ideas, coupled with the bonds that we enjoy as ‘Sapthagirians’.

         All college passed out students cherish their group photos as family relics. With this feeling to stay connected ‘Sapthagiri Alumni’ , a group which took its birth in a social networking site called Facebook, with the generous initiative taken by Mahesh & his friends- Sharaschandra, Ankur etc, held its first meet up to enhance the alumni’s interest & the following were discussed.

>  Information  about Jobs, placement drives happening in and out of the college

> To have Alumni meet up for all members once in 3 months (quarterly)

>  Creation of innovative cell in the college to encourage young minds without bias to promote their ideas

>  Work Allocation among the alumni admins and formation of new teams 

>  Website creation, collection & maintenance of databases of Alumni

>  Higher studies information to the SCE students by our Alumni

>  Conducting workshops / Technical talk by our passed out students  in the college

>  Any events happening in college will be updated in the group profile &

>  Last but not the least having some fun & gala time.

          This was done under the able guidance of Suma maam & was supported by Mahesh, Ankur, Sharaschandra, Naresh, Bharath, Sumangala and Rohini.

           We had a blast & enjoyed each & every bit of it sipping the hot coffee and the glazing windows reflected the vision in our eyes……
